Strategic Planning Frameworks for Marketing Leaders
Frameworks are useful when they force prioritisation. They fail when they become slides that never change budgets or calendars.
Choose a few metrics that matter
Revenue contribution, qualified demand, brand consideration or retention — pick the ones your organisation can actually influence with marketing. The test isn't whether a metric is trackable; nearly everything is trackable. The test is whether marketing decisions genuinely move it, or whether it's driven mainly by factors marketing doesn't control (seasonal demand, pricing, distribution). A dashboard full of metrics marketing can't influence just produces noise at the quarterly review.
Sequence bets
Not everything is Q1. Strategic planning assigns capacity to the initiatives that unlock the next stage of growth — which means naming, explicitly, what doesn't get funded this quarter so the priority actually has capacity behind it. A plan where everything is "important" is a plan where nothing has been sequenced.
In practice this means ranking bets by what they unlock, not just their individual size: a smaller initiative that opens a new channel or proves a new claim can matter more this quarter than a larger one that just repeats last year's playbook at higher spend.
Review ruthlessly
Quarterly reviews should stop work as often as they start it. Consultancy helps leadership hold that discipline — an outside voice makes it easier to kill an initiative a team has already invested time and pride in, which is genuinely hard to do from inside the same organisation.
A review that only ever adds new initiatives without retiring old ones isn't a review, it's a wishlist. The ruthless part is specifically the stopping, not the starting — starting new things is always the easy half.
In practice
Lead with the business problem. Write for a human in Bangladesh first. Keep a named reviewer on claims. Then the page is also usable by search and by answer engines.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a generic strategic-planning framework?
Most frameworks are portable everywhere and specific nowhere. This one is built around metrics an organisation can actually influence, a genuine sequencing decision (what doesn't get funded, not just what does), and a local planning calendar — monsoon, Ramadan, exam windows and Bangladeshi corporate budget cycles as real inputs, not footnotes.
Does a quarterly review replace ongoing counsel?
No. A review discipline is something a team can run itself once it's set up. Ongoing counsel is for organisations that want a senior outside voice holding that discipline continuously, not just at the framework stage.
