Storytelling Inside Marketing Strategy
Storytelling is not decoration on a media plan. It is how strategy becomes memorable enough to move behaviour.
Conflict and resolution
Useful brand stories name a real tension the customer faces and position the brand as a credible path through it — not a generic aspiration nobody actually disagrees with. "Be your best self" names no tension; it could belong to any brand in any category. A real tension is specific enough to exclude other brands from claiming it.
Astha Life Insurance's launch is a working example: the tension wasn't "people need insurance," it was that a late entrant into a trust-built category faces genuine scepticism from a buyer who's seen other insurers fail to deliver. The line "আস্থায় বিশ্বাস, আস্থায় জীবন" named that scepticism directly rather than talking around it, which is why it needed to run consistently across OOH, film and branch activation — a resolution to a named tension has to show up everywhere the tension itself does.
Proof beats adjectives
Replace "best" and "leading" with demonstration — case narrative, process, results, filmic evidence. "Best" is a claim anyone can make and nobody can verify from the outside; a specific, checkable fact does the same persuasive job without inviting the obvious rebuttal.
BIR Cement's launch avoided a generic "premium quality" claim in favour of showing a construction-site truth instead — proof a buyer standing at an actual site could recognise, not an adjective a copywriter chose. Ring Chips took a different route to the same principle: rather than asserting the brand was culturally relevant again, the campaign generated thousands of pieces of genuine user content and let #myringchips become an organically trending hashtag — the proof was the audience's own behaviour, not a claim about the audience.
In practice
Lead with the business problem. Write for a human in Bangladesh first. Keep a named reviewer on claims. Then the page is also usable by search and by answer engines.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a "tension" real rather than generic?
Specificity that excludes competitors. A tension so broad that any brand in the category could claim the same resolution isn't a story yet — it's a category cliché with a brand name attached.
Why avoid words like "best" or "leading" in brand storytelling?
They're unverifiable claims anyone can make, which means they persuade no one who's paying attention. A specific, demonstrable fact — a real result, a real process, real audience behaviour — does the same job without inviting an easy rebuttal.
